E' ancora controverso se i piemontesi Ghisilieri ed i romani Consiglieri, detti poi Ghisilieri per volontà del Sommo Pontefice San Pio V, discendessero dalla antica e patrizia famiglia bolognese e se quella che allegò a Jesi col medesimo cognome e qualche diversità di stemma fosse di una stessa agnazione. Il cognome era certamente illustre e il ramo che diede San Pio V, sorpassò in celebrità gli altri, nè vale l'asserto del Muratori che nega ogni parentela fra gli uni e gli altri. I Ghislieri, Ghisileri o Ghisilieri di Roma provenienti da un Poalo che si dice foruscito bolognese, diedero il cardinale Giambattista creato cardinale nel 1557. Erano tuttora fiorenti quando Benedetto XIV promulgò la sua bolla Urbem Roman, ma oggi sono completamente estinti.
