E' famiglia originaria del castello di Ghivizzano, e già detta dei Nozi, ch'ebbe cittadinanza lucchese nel secolo XIV e fu presente ai giuramenti di fedeltà a Giovanni di Boemia nel 1331 ed a Carlo IV nel 1369. Dal 1392 al 1797 dette alla repubblica numerosi Gonfalonieri ed Anziani, mentre altri sostennero importanti ambascerie politiche. Tommaso fu umanista nel periodo della Signoria di Paolo Giunigi; Nicolao, nello stesso secolo, protonotario apostolico, abate di Cantignano e governatore di Romagna. Jacopo, operaio di S. Martino promosse i lavori delle vetrate a colori, eseguiti da Pandolfo di Ugolino pisano, ed altre opere d'arte, come l'organo costruito da maestro Domenico degli Organi lucchese. Queste nobili tradizioni furono investite nel secolo XIX da Antonio Ghivizzani patriota e filantropo, consigliere di Stato e senatore del Regno.
