La lignée généalogique rigoureusement documentée de cette illustre et très ancienne famille fait remonter ses origines à un Jacques, dit le Maître de la Hongrie, cistercien hongrois (XII-XIII siècle). Contre la noblesse et le clergé, il recrute des groupes de roturiers dans le Brabant, la Picardie et le Hainaut, pour libérer le roi fait prisonnier à la croisade de 1250 et conquérir Jérusalem.
