A linha genealógica rigorosamente documentada desta ilustre e muito antiga família remonta a um James, conhecido como o Mestre da Hungria, um cisterciense húngaro (séculos XII-XIII). Contra os nobres e o clero recrutou grupos de plebeus em Brabante, Picardia e Hainaut, para libertar o rei feito prisioneiro na cruzada de 1250 e conquistar Jerusalém. Giacomo foi morto pelos nobres franceses e seus bandos foram dispersos. Outro ramo.
