Famiglia assai antica ed illustre, originaria di Firenze passa in Sicilia al seguito del reggimento di re Manfredo. E' comune opinione che i Giambruno ed i Bruno siano rami di un unico ceppo. I primi, che di lei si ritrovano, alla fine del XIII secolo, sono un Giovanni, e Pietro di Bruno fratelli al servizio del medesimo re, furono impiegati in molti importanti affari. Si vuole uno dei figli di Giovanni, Giambattista, allontanatosi dalla famiglia nel tempo prese a chiamarsi Giambruno. Nei tempi antichi, il cognome non era obbligatorio; si usava dire e scrivere, per esempio in tal modo: Giambattista di Giovanni di Bruno; lo stesso subiva delle modifiche per le solite cause della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi.
