La famiglia è nota in Assisi da molto tempo. Francesco Maria dei conti fu ad istanza di popolo e con i migliori auspici del pontefice Pio VI eletto Vicario Capitolare di Assisi al posto del riminese Carlo Zangari. Fu uomo di altissimo pregio per integrità di costumi e per dottrina: versatissimo in teologia, sacra scrittura, ebraico, greco e latino. Nel 1797 il pontefice lo volle vescovo furono ritrovate le ossa di alcuni santi frati minori. La raffica giacobina-celtica lo volle esiliato. Lasciò la sua biblioteca al seminario di Assisi. Era figlio di Luigi di Gaetano e della nobile Lodovica Giacopini che ottenne nel 1750 l'aggregazione alla nobiltà assisiana. La famiglia è ascritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Italiano col titolo di conte di nobile di Assisi (maschi e femmine). Altro ramo. Luigi di Gaetano, avendo sposato la nobile Lodovica Giacopini, fu aggregato alla nobiltà di Assisi nel 1750. Francesco-Maria, suo figlio, morì
