Famiglia ascritta da tempo remoto alla nobiltà di Bitonto, infeudata di Loreto, e ricevuta nel 1646 nell'Ordine di Malta come quarto di altra famiglia. Nel 1801 fu ascritta all'Elenco del priorato di Barletta nella persona di Giacinto. La famiglia Giannone fu detta anche Maggiore, ascritta al patriziato bitontino e signora al tempo di Re Guglielmo II della baronia di Loreto. Si divise in due rami: il primo detto Giannone de Maioribus è tuttavia fiorente, e 1' altro detto Giannone Alitto si estinse nel principio del secolo XIX. Vito Giannone famigliare e domestico di Maria Imperatrice di Costantinopoli nel 1365; Giovan Donato Vescovo di Ruvo. Un altro ramo trovasi trapiantato nella città di Acri in Calabria, dove fiorisce tuttora fregiato del titolo comitale.
