Antica famiglia calabrese che si crede originaria da un Giannuzzo di Antonio Savelli romano venuto nel reame di Napoli verso la fine del secolo XIV. Si stabilì nella terra di Aiello ed indi a Cosenza ove venne ascritta a quel patriziato. Nel 1592 fu infeudata di Enna Guglielmina, e nel 1698, in persona di Odoardo, della terra di Pietramala, che ritenne sino all'abolizione della feudalità. Fu decorata, per successione Rota, del titolo di principe di Cerenzia, concesso originariamente il 14 agosto 1717 a Tommaso Rota: nel 1791 fu ricevuta per giustizia nell'Ordine di Malta, e nel 1834 riconosciuta ammissibile nelle Reali Guardie del Corpo. Prima Linea iscritta all'Elenco Nobiliare Ufficiale col titolo di patrizio di Cosenza.
