Família antiga e ilustre de origem irlandesa, onde, na forma gaélica, era chamada Mac Giobùin, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos na Itália, principalmente na região da Lombardia-Veneto e na América do Norte. Segundo muitos genealogistas, essa cognominação derivaria seu nome do nome "Gibb", diminuto da equipe normanda "Gilbert", por sua vez, derivado do nome "Gislebert", que é da união da palavra "gisil" (= nobre juventude) e "berht" (= famoso, brilhante).
