Antichissima famiglia della Calabria, che alcuni scrittori ritengono abbia preso il nome dalla terra da essa posseduta. Rinaldo e Tommaso furono spogliati dei loro beni da re Carlo I d'Angiò, per aver seguito le parti sveve. Gerardo contestabile in Calabria per Carlo Illustre. Questa famiglia prese viva parte alle lotte tra Urbano VI e l'antipapa Clemente VII. Leonardo, generale dei Minori Osservanti, fu creato da questi, cardinale, ma fu poscia imprigionato per ordine di Carlo III di Durazzo, che l'inviò al papa Urbano VI dopo avergli fatto pubblicamente bruciare le sue vesti cardinalizie. Orazio prese parte alla difesa di Malta contro i Turchi nel 1565. Fabrizio fondò in Cinquefrondi il monastero dei Minori Osservanti. Ebbe questa famiglia il possesso di Tortora, Altavilla e Cinquefrondi. Nel 1615 venne decorata del titolo di marchese su questa terra, passata assieme al titolo nel 1712 alla famiglia Pescara. Nel 1703 fu ricevuta per giustizia
