Antica famiglia ligure di cui l'antico cognome era Giuffra, poi corruzzioni dialettali lo trasformarono d'apprima in Giffra, sino alla cristalizzazione odierna Gifra quando un ramo detto dei Muntanee si trapiantò in Novi Ligure nella seconda metà del secolo XVIII. I Giuffra fondarono il paese di Cassanesi di Tribogna (GE) che dipendeva dal Capitanato di Recco, ove durante la Repubblica di Genova era presente una truppa di soldati corsi per mantenere la calma tra le diverse famiglie o "Parentelle" che autogovernavano "de facto" la rispettiva villa (i Giuffra a Cassanesi, i Garbarino a Tribogna, i Basso a Bassi ecc.) e che erano divise da una faida che nuoceva all'ordine e costringeva le famiglie presenti nel territorio ad allearsi all'una o all'altra fazione e per mantenere il potere di fatto nella propria villa a sposarsi solamente tra appartenenti alla stessa parentella o clan.
