Non v'è bisogno di riferirsi ad una incontrollabile tradizione che vuole questa famiglia originaria della Moravia e portata in Italia da un Pietro con Onorio Imperatore e stabilitasi nel pavese, per riconoscerle una remota origine. Essa è una fra le più antiche e distinte del patriziato pavese e da essa sortirono illustri condottieri, podestà, governatori, ambasciatori, giureconsulti e vescovi; coprì onorifiche cariche ed ebbe giuspatronati e privilegi fra i quali quello di accompagnare il vescovo dalla Chiesa di Santo Stefano in Campagna a quella di S. Maria Segreta in ogni occasione della presa di possesso di quella Cattedra Vescovile. La prima notizia sicura dataci da cronisti pavesi si ha con un Guido che nel 1112 intervenne all'atto col quale Oprando e Pagani da Confalonieri dovettero dare certe rinunzie all'abate di S. Pietro in Ciclo d'Oro. Baliano nel 1114 lasciò la vita al servizio dei veneziani contro i dalmati
