Ancienne et très noble famille vénitienne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie et du monde. Connue à l'origine sous le nom de Giota, ses nombreuses ramifications ont parfois été retranscrites différemment au fil du temps. En effet, les attestations sont fréquentes sous les formes Giotta, Gioti et Giotti. La noblesse évidente de cette prosapia est bien confirmée par sa présence dans certains des armoiries italiennes et européennes les plus précieuses. La première preuve de cette famille se trouve à Rovinj, une ville d'Istrie appartenant autrefois à la République la plus sereine de Venise. Un Micalin, de feu Andrea (1370), était déjà florissant en 1395. Ses frères étaient : Zuanne (1400) et Nicolò (1405). Cette illustre famille, qui faisait partie de celles attribuées au Corps des Citoyens ou Nobles de Rovinj, s'installa dans les siècles suivants à Vérone, où elle fut également attribuée
