Antica e nobile famiglia originaria di Genova. Nel corso dei secoli vari membri di questa illustre casata si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia, prevalentemente in Piemonte, e vi furono accolti nelle importanti cariche della città dove ebbero dimora. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome, dovute alle solite cause della pronunzia dialettale e dal modo di interpretare nella scritturazione i cognomi, è, comunque, comune opinione che i Giovando ed i Giovandi siano rami di un unico ceppo. I nomi dei suoi componenti compaiono in atti notarili e documenti storici fin dal XV secolo, tra questi ricordiamo Morello, eletto Gran Priore in Rodi nel 1434; Barbaro, ambasciatore presso il re di Spagna nel 1596. Che i membri della famiglia Giovandi siano noncuranti delle cose volgari, ripromettendosi dalle sole loro energie la dovuta ricompensa, lo provano i documenti fino ad oggi conosciuti, come il Dizionario Storico-Blasonico
