Antica ed illustre famiglia decurionale di Como, originaria dell’Isola Comacina sul Lario, ove nel secolo IX fondò un ospedale per i poveri e i pellegrini sotto la invocazione di S. M. Maddalena, e del quale uno della agnazione Giovio fu sempre eletto rettore dal 1496 in poi. Il capostipite della famiglia si identifica in un Giacomo, da cui discende Gio. Batta, decurione nel 1465, padre di Elisabetta e Luigi († 1499), pure decurione. Da quest’ultimo nacquero Paolo (1483-1552), vescovo di Nocera, celebre storico, e Benedetto (1471-1544), scrittore latino di poesie, chiamato dall’Alciato "Varrone lombardo", insigne erudito che da Carlo V fu creato cavaliere aurato e conte. Fu quest'ultimo padre di Cassandra (n. 1538 c.), poetessa, moglie di Gerolamo Magnocavallo, signore di Giavellone nel Monferrato, di Ottavio e di Lodovico. Ques'ultimo fu padre di Antonio († 1605), cavaliere di Malta, e Paolo, a sua volta avo di Alessandro († il 1705),

Inquartato: nel primo e quarto d'azzurro, al castello di rosso fiancheggiato da due torrette e sormontato da una terza torre più elevata, fondato sopra un lago al naturale; nel secondo e terzo d'oro a tre torte di rosso, con la bordura composta di rosso e d'argento. Sul tutto d'oro all'aquila di nero coronata di oro. Cimiero: Un angelo alato d'azzurro, coronato d'oro, vestito di rosso, colle braccia tese verso due colonne d'argento a destra ed a sinistra poste in capriolo rovesciato, il tutto sormontato dal motto: Non Plus Ultra. Divisa: Fato Prudentiam Minor
