Ancient and illustrious decurional family of Como, originally from the Comacina Island on the Lario, where in the 9th century its members founded a hospital for the poor and pilgrims under the invocation of Santa Maria Maddalena, of which they were always rectors from 1496 onwards. Its progenitor is a Giacomo from whom Gio. Batta descends. Gio. Batta, decurion in 1465, was father of Elisabetta and Luigi († 1499), also decurion. The latter was father of Paolo (1483-1552), bishop of Nocera, a famous historian, Benedetto (1471-1544), Latin writer of poems, called "Varrone lombardo" by the Alciato, and also distinguished scholar that by Charles V was created golden knight and count. The latter was father of: Cassandra (b. 1538 c.), Poetess, wife of Gerolamo Magnocavallo, lord of Giavellone in Monferrato, Ottavio and Lodovico. The latter was father of Antonio († 1605), knight of Malta, and Paolo, in turn ancestor of Alessandro

Quarterly; 1° and 4° azure, a castle triple-towered gules standing in a water proper; 2° and 3° or, three torteau gules on a bordure compony gules and argent. Over all an escutcheon or, an eagle sable crowned or. Crest: an angel winged azure, crowned or, vested gules, with arms outstretched towards two columns argent dexter and sinister per chevron reversed surmounted by the motto: Non Plus Ultra.
