Ancienne famille ligurienne, de vertu claire et ancestrale, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Selon certaines reconstructions héraldiques, la famille est une branche collatérale de la noble famille piémontaise Viretti ou Viretto. Le changement de patronyme serait donc imputable à des phénomènes de variation des manuscrits et des données personnelles. En tout cas, les Girettos ont été admis dans la noblesse ligurienne locale pour le mérite militaire et civil, avant le Xe siècle.
