Der Ursprung dieses Nachnamens liegt im mittelalterlichen germanischen Namen "Godefrido" oder "Guthafriths" (= Goffredo), bestehend aus "gutha" - "gaut" (= Gott) und "friths" - "fridus" (= Frieden) , mit der Bedeutung von "Frieden in Gott", "von Gott geschützt", wahrscheinlicher persönlicher Name des Vorfahren. Diese berühmte Familie genießt seit dem 14. Jahrhundert Adel in ihrem Land, nachdem sie die Lehen von Giardinelli, Magasoli und Partanna in der Region Messina besessen hat.
