L'origine di questa grande famiglia non si basa su vincoli di sangue ma su rapporti commerciali, esistenti tra varie famiglie genovesi, armatrici delle navi che Simone Vignoso condusse contro i greci per la riconquista di Scio e di Focea. la Repubblica di Genova, non potendo soddisfare i soci delle spese incontrate, stabilì un compromesso il 26 febbr. 1347, per il quale il "dominio utile" delle dette località (con diritto di batter, monete) passava temporaneamente alla "Maonata" pur rimanendo l'alto dominio" a Genova. Fu questa la "Maona vecchia" (Società per azioni) che si diede allo sfruttamento diretto del mastice e di altre risorse nell'isola di Scio, dando in appalto le cave di allume di Focea. varie ed infine vittoriose vicende, ebbe a sostenere con greci e turchi fino a che il grande Pietro Recanelli non riprese ai primi le due Focee (1348-50) che essi avevano riavuto per tradimento.
