Si incontra questo cognome nella storia genovese fin dal 1265 con un Pietro, che abitava in quell'anno a Genova: Giovanni fu anziano nel 1300. Un altro Giovanni sottoscrisse al giuramento di fedeltà al Duca di Milano nel 1488. La fam. si stabilì a Nervi presso Genova ed ivi troviamo un Giovanni Gerolamo quondam Bartolomeo, che ottiene il 21 giugno 1748 la concessione del titolo di Conte per sè e suoi discendenti maschi da maschi da Francesco III Duca di Modena. Fu suo figlio Luigi, padre di Gerolamo e di Giuseppe, nato nel 1784. Questi fu nominato conte dal Re Carlo Alberto il 5 settembre 1842 e fu padre di Luigi e Gaspare, generale del Regio Esercito. Luigi sposò Carolina Roberti Nin di S. Tomaso dalla quale ebbe Giuseppe e Gaspare, ufficiale di Cavalleria, morto senza prole. Il Giuseppe vivente ha per figli: Luigi, Giacomo, marito di Eugenia Rati Opizzoni
