Famiglia originaria di Civitella di Romagna, dove da tempo assai remoto ebbe le principali cariche di quella comunità; alcuni dei suoi membri ebbero incarichi ragguardevoli durante il risorgimento Italiano. Nella famiglia si innestò quella dei Bernardini della Massa, di Cesena, che si ritiene discendesse dai Tarlati di Arezzo, e che da Guiodobaldo Duca di Urbino fu investita del feudo della Massa in persona di Martino. Lucia Bernardini, moglie di Giulio Cesare de Medici, nel 1703 fondò una commenda nell'Ordine di S. Stefano a favore del primogenito di sua casa. Il conte Pirro, morto nel 1856, dalla contessa Laura Montani, ultima di sua casa, ebbe tre femmine. La primogenita, Emilia, sposò Francesco padre di Italo che assunse il predicato della Massa ed a favore del quale nel 1906 S.M. il Re con decreto motu proprio rinnovò il titolo comitale della famiglia Montani.
