Ancient and noble European family, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. This surname has a patronymic origin, meaning "son of Gonçalo". The first references to the house are found in Spain, in the kingdom of Galicia, where a Moniz Gonçalo flourished. One of his descendants Don Antão Gonçalves is the first of the Portuguese line of the family. For services rendered to the Crown, the family received the titles of: Lord of Alentejo, Viscount and Archduke. Before the sixteenth century, the family had received concession of the coat of arms. In the mid-sixteenth century, Lançarotte and Sebastião, brothers, moved to the Canaries. Lançarotte settled in Tenerife, where he appeared as a wealthy man in 1552.
