Antiga e nobre família europeia, de clara e ancestral virtude, que se difundiu mundialmente, ao longo dos séculos. Este apelido tem origem patronímica, significando "filho de Gonçalo". As primeiras referências à casa encontram-se em Espanha, no reino da Galiza, onde floresceu um Moniz Gonçalo. Um dos seus descendentes Don Antão Gonçalves é o primeiro da linha portuguesa da família. Pelos serviços prestados à Coroa, a família recebeu os títulos de: Senhor do Alentejo, Visconde e Arquiduque. Antes do século XVI, a família havia recebido concessão do brasão. Em meados do século XVI, Lançarotte e Sebastião, irmãos, mudaram-se para as Canárias. Lançarotte se estabeleceu em Tenerife, onde apareceu como um homem rico em 1552.
