Família de origem italiana, que procede de D. Vivaldo Vivaldi, cavaleiro, da família dos Vivaldis, da república de Génova, o qual passou em 1257 a Lisboa, fugindo à perseguição de Simão Boca-Negra. D. Vivaldo Vivaldi casou com uma senhora chamada D. Inês, que, enviuvando, fundou o mosteiro de Santa Clara, em Lisboa. Tiveram por filho a D. João Vivaldi, pai de Estêvão Anes, que descobriu a grã e o modo de se beneficiar, pelo que foi conhecido por Estêvão Anes da G.. A alcunha passou como apelido a seus descendentes, os quais abandonaram o da família. Este Estêvão Anes da G. foi ascendente de outro de igual nome, um dos fidalgos que auxiliaram o Mestre de Avis quando esteve cercado em Lisboa pelo Rei de Castela, D. João I, cidadão da mesma cidade e casado com Leonor Fernandes Pimentel ou com Leonor Dias, filha de Diogo Álvares e de sua mulher, Inês Álvares, como pretende o Padre António Carvalho da Costa, e de cujo matrimónio ficou geraçaõ.
