Antigua familia de Parma, originaria de una fracción del municipio de Corniglio, donde ejercía la jurisdicción feudal. En 1265 se mudó a Bellagio, en el lago de Como, y permaneció allí hasta 1600, año en el que una de sus sucursales se mudó a Milán. La misma rama, en 1633, pasó a Trento, donde fue adscrita entre esos nobles ciudadanos. En Trento, el emperador Fernando III, con diploma el 11 de abril de 1656, confirió la nobleza hereditaria del Imperio a Giampietro Gramatica, con sus hijos Virgilio y Simone. Del mismo emperador también logró combinar las armas de la familia con las armas de Austria. La familia también pasó por S. Michele d'Adige, luego a Brescia, Chiavari y finalmente a Génova.
