Antica ed illustre famiglia pisana, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, con residenza in San Concordio, castello tre miglia distante da Pisa, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. A tal casato appartenne il celeberrimo Fra Bartolomeo da San Concordio, ivi nato nel 1262, uomo veramente esemplare, benigno e dolce verso gli altri, ma verso di sè rigido e austero. Laureatosi in patria e divenuto Canonico della Primaziale di Pisa, al dir del Cardosi vestì l'abito di San Domenico, professando nel Convento di Santa Caterina. Fece i suoi studi prima in Bologna, indi in Parigi, ov'ebbe comodità di ascoltare uomini grandi nelle scienze e di soddisfare il suo genio, divenendo valente in grammatica, in oratoria, in filosofia, in legge, intendente assai, come si vuole, di musica, e versato nelle latine e toscane muse.
