Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno delle Due Sicilie, conosciuta come Grande o de Grandis, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto viene tramandato da storici ed araldisti, fu suo capostipite un Leone, cavaliere romano, che al tempo dell'Imperatore Ottone I fu soprannominato "Il Grande" per i suoi molti meriti militari. I suoi discendenti presero quindi a cognominarsi in tal modo. Il primo che portò la famiglia in Sicilia fu però un Luca de Grandis, anch'egli gentiluomo romano e discendente del predetto Leone, che, passato nel reggimento di Federico II, ebbe in ricompensa il godimento della città di Siracusa per tre anni. Egli si casò con la figlia di Pietro d'Ancona, nell'anno 1305, stabilendo la sua discendenza proprio in Siracusa. I suoi successori ebbero sempre le più importanti cariche ed uffici cittadini.
