Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, detta Crassi, Grassi, De Grassi o Grassa, la cui presenza nelle terre lombarde risale ad epoca assai lontana, com'è altrettanto remota la loro origine romana. Colui che fu poi S. Ambrogio, eletto più volte vescovo di Milano, di cui divenne il patrono, nel 370 era governatore delle provincie della Liguria e dell'Emilia con sede a Milano; da Roma trasse con sé alcune famiglie fedeli e cioè i G., i Villano, i Matrignani ed i Muciani, che in città ed oltre i confini della nuova patria stabilirono la loro residenza ed ivi fiorirono; non escludiamo tuttavia che essi si siano diffusi immigrando o sciogliendosi da colonie romane in dissoluzione già nell'alto medioevo. Tanto il Moriggia quanto il Visconti ed il Gargantini,, ci riferiscono che nel 755 venne eletto arcivescovo di Milano, Tommaso "dell'antica e nobile casa Grassa" da papa Stefano II e che fu il primo
