Familia antigua y muy noble, llamada Crassi, Grassi, De Grassi o Grassa, cuya presencia en las tierras lombardas se remonta a tiempos muy lejanos, ya que su origen romano es igualmente remoto. El que luego fue San Ambrosio, elegido obispo de Milán varias veces, del cual se convirtió en mecenas, en 370 fue gobernador de las provincias de Liguria y Emilia con sede en Milán; de Roma trajo consigo algunas familias fieles, a saber, G., Villano, Matrignani y Muciani, quienes establecieron su residencia en la ciudad y más allá de las fronteras de la nueva patria y florecieron allí; sin embargo, no descartamos que se propaguen al inmigrar o disolverse de las colonias romanas en disolución ya a principios de la Edad Media. Tanto Moriggia como Visconti y Gargantini nos cuentan que en 755 Tommasso "de la antigua y noble Casa Grassa" fue elegido arzobispo de Milán por el papa
