La presenza della famiglia Grasso nelle terre lombarde risale ad epoca assai lontana com'è altrettanto remota la loro origine romana: colui che fu poi S. Ambrogio, eletto più volte vescovo di Milano e ne divenne il patrono, nel 370 era governatore delle provincie della Liguria e dell'Emilia con sede a Milano; da Roma trasse con sè alcune famiglie fedeli e cioè i Grasso, i Villano, i Matrignani ed i Muciani che in città ed oltre i confini della nuova patria stabilirono la loro residenza e vi fiorirono; non escludiamo tuttavia ch'essi si siano diffusi immigrando o sciogliendosi da colonie romane in dissoluzione già nell'alto medioevo. Tanto il Moriggia quanto il Visconti ed il Gargantini ci riferiscono che nel 755 venne eletto arcivescovo di Milano, Tommaso "dell'antica e nobile casa Grasso" da papa Stefano II e fu il primo cui venne attribuito il titolo di arcivescovo; morì nel 798 ed ebbe
