Entre os antigos apelidos catalães mencionados nos Armoriais conta-se o de Grave, sem que, no entanto, os heraldistas mencionem em qual das localidades catalãs teriam tido o seu berço mais remoto. Alguns dos investigadores apontam-lhe, contudo, origens mais remotas em França, onde era também de grande antiguidade uma família de apelido Grave, da qual sobressaíu no século XVIII o General Pedro Grave, Marquês de Grave, nascido em 1755, o qual, para além de militar brilhante foi também grande estadista e homem de letras. Foi, contudo em Espanha que as armas aqui indicadas foram usadas, mencionando-as o Repertório de Blasones de la Comunidad Hispamica, de Vicente Cadenas, e outras obras similares. Em Portugal o apelido foi usado sobretudo no Alentejo onde os deste apelido possuíram importantes herdades desde há gerações, tendo-se notabilizado também nas Letras, alguns Grave,destacando-se o poeta e publicista João Grave, nascido em Vagos em 1872.
