La familia noble es de Gubbio, donde disfrutó de la nobleza desde el siglo XI e incluso antes si se acepta la leyenda de que desciende de uno de esos caballeros que acompañaron al emperador Otto en Italia. Él reconoce como su progenitor a Pietro di Grillo quien en 1070 junto con su esposa María fue una donación a la catedral de Eugubina como se muestra en un documento auténtico. La familia dio personajes ilustres que se hicieron famosos en armas y letras. Paolo Benedetto fue uno de los capitanes de los cruzados de Eugubin en 1901.
