La famille noble vient de Gubbio où elle jouissait de la noblesse depuis le XIe siècle et même plus tôt si l'on accepte la légende selon laquelle elle descend d'un de ces chevaliers qui accompagnèrent l'empereur Otton en Italie. Il reconnaît comme son ancêtre un Pietro di Grillo qui en 1070 avec sa femme Maria fit don à la cathédrale Eugubina comme le montre un document authentique.
