Familia muy antigua y muy noble, que se cree que es originaria de Francia, de la misma jamba de los príncipes de Mónaco, y que se mudó a Génova en 1070, con Iñigo Grimaldo. En esta ciudad, los linajes genoveses de las familias Ceva, Castro o Castello, Taschifeloni, Oliva, Crespini y Messimeri se agregaron al gran hotel Grimaldi, tomando su nombre y emblema.
