D'incerta origine, ma assai antica in Castrovillari, si vuole che abbia dato il nome all'omonimo comune calabrese. Nel corso dei secoli vari membri di questa illustre casata, si propagarono in diverse regioni d'Italia e vi furono accolti nelle importanti cariche della città dove ebbero dimora. I nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano ricordati in atti notarili e contratti di acquisto di terre e case sin da tempi molto antichi. Secondo una vecchia cronaca veneta, si legge che "venne da Castrovillari nel 1541 e sono huomini di grandissimo intelletto, ma molto superbi; mancò questa famiglia in ser Francesco et questo perchè lui era andato molte volte al gran Consiglio et sempre portava una ballotta d'oro con lui et con quella metteva man in Capello, et in tal modo votava due volte ..". La versione è descritta altrove un pò diversamente. Il fatto è che per tale motivo fu carcerato,
