Questa nobile famiglia è tra le più antiche della città di Bergamo: "ex primaris", (dipl, 1590 nell'arch. com). Prese forse ai confini delle tre vicinie di S. Lorenzo, di S. Pancrazio e di S. Michele dell'Arco, e ricordata nei più antichi statuti. Ancor oggi una viuzza, che da quella ripa conduce a San Michele dell'Arco, si chiama "via R."; qui dunque doveva trovavasi il più antico fortilizio dei R. Ma già nel mille duecento Daiberto, Atto, od Azzone, Berardo, Mazuco e Belfante, diedero origine ai rami Daiberti, Azueli, Berardi, Mazzuconi e Belfanti. Da Belfanti prese denominazione un castello situato sulla collina di S. Michele del Pozzo Bianco verso Pignolo, dove si ridusse a salvamento il vescovo Giovanni nel 1296 quando gli venne incendiato l'episcopio; la denominazione passò poi al baluardo sorto sopra le rovine di quello nel 1561.
