Ancient and noble German family, originally from Rhineland, known as Grunwald or Grunwaldt, of clear and ancestral virtue, with a main branch in France, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. It is a topographic last name, given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree. The first family member we know of, based also on the work of Johann Siebmacher, is a Girlach, councillor of Düsseldorf, flourishing in 1380. In fact, this family, in all ages, always stood out, thanks to the prominent figures, which gave birth, in the public service, in the liberal professions and in the military service. From our archives: Arnold, knight, flourishing in Düsseldorf, in 1456; Sebastian, councillor in Düsseldorf, flourishing in 1482; Georg, jurist, flourishing in Düsseldorf, in 1527; Andreas, notary, flourishing in Strasbourg, in 1553; Heinrich, knight and landowner in Rhineland, flourishing
