Il Candida, nelle Memorie delle Famiglie Nobili, Napoli, 1882, riferisce come questa famiglia sia dagli autori ritenuta originaria del Piemonte, e che prese nome dal Castello di Quart nella Valle d'Aosta. Il primo di cui si ha memoria nel Regno di Napoli è Giovanni Quarto, milite dell'imperatore Federico II di Svevia, dal quale ebbe concessa una foresta denominata Montegrosso, in tenimento di Bari. I Quarto godettero nobiltà in Salerno, nel seggio di Portaretese, in Barletta dal 1716 ed in Bitonto. Ebbe questa famiglia illustri personaggi nelle armi e preclari negli studi, fra i quali sono degni di memoria Giovanni, commendatore del S.M.O. di Malta, di Nardò e Grassano, e capitano di una galera dell'Ordine contro i Turchi; e Paolo Maria, della Compagnia dei Chierici Regolari, che nel 1611 si distinse per i suoi studi sulla teologia morale, e sopra i Sacri Riti, e diede alle stampe varie opere tenute in
