Apellido de origen portugués. Desciende de una de las más antiguas familias de Portugal. Don Guido Arnaldes fue, allá por el siglo X, señor de Aguiar de Sousa y del Pazo del mismo nombre, que su mujer llevó en dote al matrimonio. De este enlace, con Doña Legunda Soares nació Don Suero Guedes, que fue fundador del monasterio de Várzea y tuvo entre otros hijos a Don Gueda el Viejo, señor de Barroso, padre a su vez de Men Guedes, igualmente llamado "el Viejo", ricohome, sucesor en el señorío de su padre, que casó con Doña Sancha, siendo padres de Don Gomes Mendes Guedes. Un hijo de dicho Don Gomes, que se llamó Don Gueda Gomes, estuvo en la conquista d Sevilla, destacándose por su arrojo y valentía. Casado con Doña Urraca Henriques de Portocarreiro, tuvieron varios hijos que tomaron el patronímico de Guedes, formándose así el tronco de este
