Casato assai antico e nobile, un membro del quale, Guido nipote di Ottone il Grande, vuolsi sia calato in Italia nel 938, al seguito dello zio che veniva a Roma per farsi incoronare imperatore. Al ritorno Ottone gli conferì la contea di Romagna ed egli si stabilì in Ravenna ove i suoi discendenti divennero potenti feudatari e stipiti dei Guidi, parecchi dei quali ebbero il soprannome di Guerra non solo perché valorosi nelle armi ma, e soprattutto, per l'innata crudeltà che causò loro orribili vendette, spietati stermini, il bando e la confisca di ogni possedimento. Nonostante tutto ciò i Guidi sono oggidì fiorenti a Roma, Volterra, Mantova e Ferrara la qual cosa concede di supporre che qualche nucleo per sfuggire alle rappresaglie su riferite sia immigrato in suolo lombardo a Pavia, Voghera, Castelnuovo, Tortona e nel Monferrato a Vercelli, Casale, Alessandria - col nome di Guerra anziché Guidi - ove
