Questa antica e nobile famiglia fermana fu divisa in più rami. Uno di essi fu molto potente, ed ebbe gran parte insieme ai Brancadoro e ai Nobili nelle fiere discordie, per il predominio delle proprie fazioni che agitarono per lungo tempo la città e il contado, verso la fine del sec. XV e sul principio del XVI. Tale linea dette illustri personaggi nelle armi, nel diritto, nelle lettere e nella vita ecclesiastica. La famiglia Guerriera, ebbe titolo Marchionale e si estinse nel sec. XIX. Dalla famiglia di Fermo proveniva il ramo che si stabilì in Mantova, ove dai Signori di quel Marchesato ebbe il titolo Marchionale e il diritto di aggiungere il cognome Gonzaga. Il ramo ancor fiorente di Fermo, risiedette lungamente in Massa, castello dell'antico Stato fermano, da dove passò a stabilirsi a Fermo verso la metà del sec.
