Le prime notizie che si hanno di questa famiglia risalgono al 1150, in cui i Guiccioli furono investiti del feudo di Dozza dal vescovo di Imola. nel 1180 un Guicciolo, padre a Bonagiunta, che ebbe per figlio Guicciolo II, da cui discese Prudenzino, padre a Guicciolo III ed a Paolo, i quali come signori di Dozza, di parte guelfa, assieme con altri signori di città e castella, fecero sicurtà per l'osservanza della pace fra Geremei e Lambertazzi di Bologna, come risulta dallo storico Ghirardacci, il quale dice che la predetta pace fu solennemente celebrata in Bologna nel 1279 alla presenza del Cardinale Legato conte di Romagna e di altri vescovi e prelati. Da Imola i Guiccioli passarono a Ravenna e, fra i personaggi di questa famiglia che maggiormente si segnalarono va ricordato un Giovanni di Guizolo che fu membro del Consiglio di Ravenna nel 1220.
