The first news we have of this family dates back to 1150, when the Guiccioli were invested with the fiefdom of Dozza by the bishop of Imola. in 1180 a Guicciolo, father in Bonagiunta, who had for his son Guicciolo II, from whom Prudenzino descended, father to Guicciolo III and Paolo, who as lords of Dozza, part of the Guelph, together with other lords of the city and castle, made security for the observance of peace between Geremei and Lambertazzi of Bologna, as is clear from the historian Ghirardacci, who says that the aforementioned peace was solemnly celebrated in Bologna in 1279 in the presence of the Cardinal Legate count of Romagna and other bishops and prelates.
