Famiglia assai antica. Cominciarono a denominarsi Guidobono, e poi, per il nome di taluno di essi, si dissero Cavalchini. Per l'eredità e successione Garofoli (diploma 20 marzo 1623) i progeniti della casa ne assunsero il casato e l'arma. Fecero prova per Malta, come quarto Cavalchini (1623) e Bussetti (1609), ed ebbero un cavaliere professo. A prescindere dalle origini favolose che recenti studi dimostrano infondate, della origine cioè Manfredinga di questa famiglia, le prime memori e risalgono a un Giuliano (viv 1354) castellano del castello di Porta Giovia a Milano, padre di Cavalchino, castellano pure per i Visconti di S. Angelo in Lombardia (1414), di Lumello (1415), morto a Lodi il 2 nov. 1426 essendo castellano di quella città, il cui figlio Antonio (nato nel 1393 e morto a (Savona tenuto a Battesimo da Filippo Maria Visconti, fu Segretario Ducale, Governatore di Pavia, Ambasciatore a Venezia e Mantova, Capitano e governatore
