Questa celebre famiglia, detta pure de' Monti, discende dall'antica dei Monticellil conti di Tuscolo ed antichi baroni romani, e precisamente da un Gottifredo fratello del cardinale Ottaviano che fu dall'Imperatore Federico I creato antipapa sotto il nome di Vittore IV nel 1159, il quale era stato l'anno antecedente investito con gli altri suoi fratelli della città e territorio di Terni. Due di questi sognori Monticelli, Ottone e Gottifredo, furono consoli romani nel 1157. I Monteduranti si cognominarono pure anticamente Guidoni forse perchè due membri di essi, padre e figlio, vissuti verso la fine del XII e in principio del XIII secolo, si chiamarono Guidone, ed assunsero il nuovo nome, che rimase loro, da una montagna del territorio di Terni da essi posseduta. Nicola e Bartolomeo capi priori della città di Terni, il primo nel 1398 e 1408, e l'altro nel 1403; Paolo di Pietro podestà di Firenze nel 1345, e
