Antichissima ed illustre famiglia modenese, che ha goduto nobiltà anche in Reggio Emilia ed in Bologna. Già nel 1255 un Fr. Galeotto è nominato quale Consigliere di Manfredi, re di Sicilia, agli albrori del '500 a Correggio un Guidotte è arciprete della locale chiesa e a San Miniato opera il notaio Francesco, di Lorenzo, da Castelfranco di Sopra, nel 1600 Paolo è nominato come un affermato pittore. La famiglia strinse legami con il nobile casato dei Magnani, appartenendo entrambe al ceto senatorio bolognese ed avendo, tra i loro membri, molti esponenti della vita cittadina. L'incontro tra le due famiglie risale al testamento di Lorenzo Magnani del 1604, che istituì quali eredi i figli della propria famiglia, in discendenza maschile, fino a sua estinzione e, in mancanza di questa discendenza, dei maschi della linea femminile. Prevedendo anche l'estinzione di tale discendenza femminile, istituì suoi eredi i figli maschi della famiglia Bolognetti
