Antica e nobile famiglia, detta Guiraldi o Guirao, originaria di Spagna, si trasferì in Cagliari le cui notizie risalgono al secolo XVII. Nel 1693 un Giovanni Francesco ottenne il cavalierato ereditario e nel 1698 fu ammesso allo stamento militare durante il Parlamento Montellano. Il medesimo nel 1700 ottenne la nobiltà; i suoi figli formarono due diversi rami della famiglia. Da Giovanni discese il ramo cagliaritano le cui condizioni andarono decadendo in quanto, nel corso del secolo XVIII, perdette le tonnare di S. Elia e Pula. Da Nicolò, vicario reale di Cagliari, discese il ramo che si trasferì ad Alghero e che espresse il dottor Nicolò medico dello zar.
