Antica famiglia triestina, compresa tra le tredici patrizie di detta terra. Un Cristoforo, nell'anno 1400, fu della Balia, un Domenico fu al servizio del Pontefice Pio II e, nel 1463, fu destinato ad annunziare alla propria patria la pace conclusa tra l'Imperatore e la Repubblica Veneta. Con diploma del 1501 fu creato famigliare dell'Imperatrice Bianca-Maria. Nel 1811 la famiglia ottenne il titolo di baroni, e nel 1855 quello di cavalieri d'Ehrwall. Che i membri della famiglia siano noncuranti delle cose volgari, ripromettendosi dalle sole loro energie la dovuta ricompensa, lo provano i documenti fino ad oggi conosciuti come il Dizionario Storico-Blasonico del commendatore G.B. di Crollalanza che ne ha raccolte le tracce lasciate dalla famiglia in quelle città ove ebbe dimora ricoprendo cariche legislative, militari o altro, contribuendo non poco alla riuscita di quei documenti utili alla scoperta di questa famiglia.
