Esta família, também dita van der Hagen, passou ao Faial na pessoa de Guilherme van der H., fidalgo da Alemanha e muito abastado, que levou consigo mulher, casa e família. Trouxe duas urcas carregadas de gente e fazenda, com o fim de povoar aquela ilha, e fez-se acompanhar de oficiais mecânicos de todos os ofícios, com suas mulheres. Viveu na ilha de S. Jorge à lei da nobreza, com todo o aparato e serviço, e teve as suas armas confirmadas por D. João II, cuja Carta ardeu na sua casa da Ilha Terceira. A família van der H. é originária de Cléves. O apelido foi traduzido em Portugal para Silveira, forma em que ainda hoje é usado, mas, por deturpação, deu, também, Vandraga. Parece que Guilherme van de H., no Faial, se chamou ou foi conhecido por Guilherme Vandraga da Silveira, tendo assim no seu nome as duas formas - adulterada e traduzida - do apelido de origem.
