Antica ed assai nobile famiglia originaria da Viterbo Scritta Janni (di/de) o Ianni (di/de) propagata, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Questa antica cognominizzazione dovrebbe da modificazioni dialettali di forme contratte del nome Johannes o di forme aferetiche del nome Giovanni di cui si ha esempio in un testo del 1308, che riporta: "...quilibet eorum in solidum stipulatione solemni promiserunt et convenerunt Ianni Bonaccursi, civi et mercatori florentino de societate Macciorum de Florentia stipulanti . Altra famiglia. Al dir di autorevoli araldisti è un ramo familiare dei Gianni di Francia e Toscana con il cognome modificato a causa di inflessioni dialettali.
